All genres, all levels, all voices welcome, from your very first lesson through to professional-level coaching.
Singing Lessons Made for You
Joey is an experienced singing teacher, working across every genre of music — musical theatre, opera, rock, pop, you name it. No two students are the same, so no two lessons are either. Whatever you're hoping to get out of singing, whether that's building confidence for the first time, working towards grades or further training, or perhaps fine-tuning a professional voice, you'll work together at your own pace, in a relaxed and supportive space.
Along the way, you'll cover things like:
-
Posture and body alignment
-
Breath connection and support
-
Vocal production and technique adapted for the genre you are approaching
-
Tone and resonance
-
Placement
-
Style and how to make a song your own
-
Vocal anatomy — a bit of the "how it all works"
-
Interpretation and performance
-
How your body and mind affect the way you sing
Meet Joey
Joey Dexter is an Anglo-American vocalist, session singer, and singing teacher who started singing aged just nine, as a choral scholar at Ampleforth College, before going on to study music at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Music runs in the family too — Joey's one of several family members who work in the music and performance industry.
Since then, Joey's had a brilliantly varied career spanning musical theatre, opera, rock and pop, and he loves bringing all of that experience into the lesson room. Highlights along the way include playing Frankie Valli on the Australian tour of The Jersey Guys, two years running, performing as a soloist at the Royal Albert Hall, and taking on the role of Bobby in Stephen Sondheim's Company. He still performs regularly as lead vocalist with several bands and vocal groups, and has sung chorus and solo parts under acclaimed conductors.
It's this real-world, on-the-stage experience that Joey brings to every lesson — helping students of all levels build technique, confidence, and a sound that's truly their own.
A Journey Through Vocal Rehabilitation
A few years ago, Joey's voice was put to the ultimate test. COVID-19 left him with nerve damage that took his singing voice away entirely, kicking off a three-year rehabilitation journey back to full voice — guided every step of the way by a clinical and vocal support system (which includes his wife, Lucy) a Speech and Language Therapist specialising in voice rehabilitation.
It was a long road, but Joey's back to full form performing and teaching again, and he wouldn't change the experience for the world. Going through vocal rehabilitation from the inside gave him a depth of understanding of the voice that you simply can't get any other way — how it works, how it can go wrong, and just how remarkable it is when it comes back. That first-hand insight into vocal health, recovery, and care now shapes every lesson Joey teaches, bringing a rare level of empathy, patience, and genuine appreciation for the voice to his students, whatever stage they're at.
